Remembering Walter LaFeber

In Memoriam - Walter La Feber (1933-2021)

We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Walter LaFeber yesterday. He was simply a giant in the field of U.S. foreign relations, whose books defined and redefined the field.  Ranging from his 1963 The New American Empire to his 1999 Michael Jordan and the New Global Capitalism, his scholarship literally spanned the globe and the centuries and always left us thinking anew.

[ADST] "Remembering George Schultz"

ADST's Virtual Diplomatic Lunch Discussion Presents:
"Remembering George Shultz"

JIM TIMBIE, retired U.S. diplomat, will speak about the legacy of former Secretary of State George Shultz and reflect on his own career negotiating arms control and nonproliferation agreements.

Join here live via Zoom.

A a forty-year veteran of the Department of State and a key player in the formation or implementation of virtually every important arms control and nonproliferation effort that occurred during his tenure, Timbie played a central role in the negotiation of the INF and START nuclear arms reductions agreements, the purchase from Russia of enriched uranium extracted from dismantled nuclear weapons for use as fuel to produce electricity in the United States, and the establishment of an international enriched uranium fuel bank. Most recently he was the lead U.S. expert in the negotiation of the nuclear agreement with Iran. Timbie was a model diplomat, scientist and public servant, and he continues to be a role model for all those who aspire to join or excel in the field.

Jim Timbie and George Shultz collaborated on a book, A Hinge of History: Governance in an Emerging New World, which examines a range of issues shaping our present and future, region by region. Please join us live on February 25 at 12:30 p.m. EST.
