British International History Group 34th Annual Conference | 2-4 September 2026 | Loughborough University
Call for Papers, deadline – 1 May 2026
The BIHG Committee invites you to contribute a paper to its 34nd annual conference. We accept both individual papers (of 20 minutes) and complete panel submissions (consisting of three 20 minute papers). As in previous years, we encourage proposals for papers from a wide range of subjects from any approach or period in international history. These include:
- The history of diplomacy and the relations between states
- Domestic issues in foreign policy
- Transnational history including social and cultural movements
- The history of war and strategy, intelligence and/or propaganda
- Imperial and postcolonial history & inter-imperial relations,
- Contemporary international history
- Teaching and/or researching international history
Those wishing to offer a paper should send a short CV and 200 word abstract to the following email address: [email protected] by Friday 1 May 2026.
- Salaried staff (early bird rate, if paid by 31 May): £ 180 (£160 early bird)
- PhD students, unwaged & retired: £ 140 (£120 early bird)
Acceptances will be announced on 10 May 2026. The Loughborough online shop will open simultaneously. The registration fee covers lunches on Thursday and Friday, admittance to all panels, a Wednesday evening pizza mixer, and the pre-keynote wine reception. There will be a conference dinner after the keynote lecture on Thursday, at an additional cost of £50. There will be reasonably priced accommodation options available on campus.
Bursaries: This year we are pleased to announce that there will be a small number of bursaries that will cover the PhD registration fee rate (£120), only, available for:
- Those currently undertaking a PhD;
- Those without access to institutional research funds (e.g. part-time or hourly paid lecturers within five years of their PhD);
- Recent PhDs who are no longer in receipt of stipends and not in full-time employment or eligible for institutional support.
Please indicate clearly if you wish to be considered for a bursary in your paper submission. If you are a PhD student, please state whether you are funded or self-funded, and outline your current academic employment status, if a recent PhD. Subject to meeting the eligibility criteria, bursaries will be awarded on the basis of the quality of the abstract, and need.
